-------- WUDANG -------- In 1281, China is ruled by Kublai Kahn, the first emperor of the Yuan dinasty. Influenced by a force unknown to him (*), Kublai adopted a sympathetic position towards Buddhism, and a persecution position towards its rival religion, the Taoism. In the process, he ordered to burn taoist texts like the Daozang, and forced taoists to convert to buddhism. This persecution included taoist monasteries present in Wudang mountains, specially the Purple Cloud Temple, which was converted to a buddhist temple, and also set as home of a powerful noble dedicated to tea trading. One of the taoist monks refused to convert, for which he has been incarcerated in one of the subterranean dungeons of the complex, for later execution. His best friend, Qi Wen Wei, has managed to escape from persecution, but as a good taoist and Wudang quan master, he consider friendship as the most important value, so he has returned to Wudang to rescue him. Your task is to help Qi Wen Wei to rescue his best friend, fighting the imperial guards that patrol the complex. Structure and Concepts ---------------------- - This program is designed for ZX Spectrum 48K and compatibles. If the "Pure Basic Contest" is loaded in 128K mode, a message will show up requiring to change to 48K mode, for which you just need to type the "RUN" command and Enter. In the version outside contest, the change is automatic. - The mission of Wen Wei will take place in the Purple Cloud Temple and surroundings. With the help of his Wudang sword and Wushu (Kung Fu) skills, he must defeat the imperial guards present in the building. You can select 3 levels of difficulty when starting the mission. - The life force (Qi or Chi) of Wen Wei is represented by the ying yang symbol in the lower left part of the screen. The red demon in the lower center, represents the energy of the guard present in the screen. - In general, when beating a guard, Wen Wei will absorb his Qi or life force. In certain occasions, however, he will take keys carried by guards, to open doors in the temple. - After long training years in Wudang, Wen Wei is capable of walking walls and even fly. This action can be done by pressing Up key. - When facing an enemy, the duel will automatically start. Due to honor, the battle cannot be abandoned, so every fight must be previously meditated. - The sword is only used during duels. By pressing fire, Wen Wei will launch a sword thrust. Press Up or Down keys to block in the specified direction. It's essential to learn the guards' gestures, to anticipate blocks and increase counter-attack chances. - Besides guards, Wen Wei will face Wus (sorcerers) which will throw negative energy balls towards our hero. It is adviced to block them with the sword and then, run towards the Wu and attack him with the sword. - There are two sub-games that provides a permanent increment of the Qi as reward: * One is the so-called "Chinese Arkanoid", created by the Shaolin monks in the V a.D. century, as a way of dissipate boredom. Use the direction keys to control two bamboo canes to guide a Baoding ball (or Kung Fu Chio) to destroy some brick walls, avoiding two dangerous demons. * The other sub-game involves meditating to channel the Qi thru mice present in the tea warehouse, to get a Qi potion. Push the mice in the right direction and order. Control Options --------------- Redefinable keys with simultaneous presses support, plus Kempston, Sinclair and Cursor Joysticks. Caps Shift+0 = Abort mission Trivia ------ - Wudang is the remake of Kung Fu 2 (May 1991), and keeps many of its elements: 36 screens, underground caverns, two subgames (labyrinth and brick smasher), etc. - It is completely programmed in pure Basic, to be submitted to the Bytemaniacos Basic Contest. (*) The brain of Kublai Kahn, has been seized by the quantum army of Kalkux prince from 2992 year, altering spacetime against taoism, which philosophy turned humans into a powerful force by the end of the third millenium.
